This learning module discusses equal employment opportunity (EEO) and affirmative action

This learning module discusses equal employment opportunity (EEO) and affirmative action in the workplace.
The concept of equal employment opportunity (EEO) requires employers to provide equal and fair chances to all workers, regardless of their protected traits like ethnicity, gender, age and nationality. The primary objective of equal employment opportunity is to guarantee that each and every employee has an equal opportunity to succeed, to put a stop to discrimination in the place of work and to penalise those who practice it.
Affirmative action is closely related to Equal employment opportunity (EEO)but is different because it a policy or practice that aims to increase the representation of members of underrepresented groups in areas of employment, education, and other areas of society. The goal of affirmative action is to address past and ongoing discrimination and to promote diversity and inclusion. For example, in the past the job market has been strongly represented by males. Affirmative action seek to address this imbalance by actively increasing the numbers of women to match up the number of males in the workplace.

An example of affirmative action in ZW is the establishment of quotas for the representation of women in decision-making positions. The Zimbabwean Constitution requires that at least one-third of all elected and appointed public bodies be composed of women. In addition, the government has implemented a number of programs and initiatives aimed at increasing the participation of women in the workforce, including training and capacity-building programs and the establishment of women-owned businesses.

Besides women, in ZW, affirmative action policies have largely focused on increasing the representation of historically marginalized groups, black ownership of business, people with disabilities, and members of certain ethnic groups.
